A meeting with Marina, the person in charge of the stables, is fixed for nine o'clock. The horses are already ready, and before leaving we look over the village of Villanovaforru, which lies just below the place where we are standing. We leave the stables following Marina on Nugoro, and straight after we thread our way down a little narrow road that leads to Funtana Jannus.

We ride through the first part of the route through Mediterranean bush, broom, rockrose, and lentisk, and we enter into the last surviving wood of holm-oaks. We ride for a while through a lush vegetation until we get onto the path that leaves the woods and carries on between almond and olive trees, cultivated fields, and small groups of eucalyptus. We pass near the remainings of Nuraghe 'e Tola in the proximity of which, a peculiar "pinnetta" (a traditional hut with a round wall and a wooden roof) has been built.

Further on, we discover something else: we reach the Grave of the Giants Su Cuaddu de Nixias, in which the large hollow hole for the deposition can be seen, as well as the wide semi-circular exedra and the enormous stem-gate. We continue our excursion in the valley to the left of the steep borders of the Giara di Siddi, until we reach Corona Arrubia. The latter is a high basaltic wall which gets its red colour from the lichen that grow on it. At the foot of this cliff, the Consortium "Sa Corona Arrubia" constructed the building that will host an important museum of natural sciences. Near the top of the cliff, one can see the main structure which will connect it to the museum by a cable car.

We continue our excursion on the path that climbs over some bare hills, and carries on through vegetable gardens, vineyards, olive trees and Mediterranean bush. The view is picturesque and we go up slowly to Nuraghe Genna Maria (the findings that were recovered during the recent archeological works can be admired in the interesting Archeological Museum in the village). We visit the nuraghe, from which it is possible to enjoy an exceptional view over all the mounts of Sardinia.

We are only a few hundred meters from the stables, but we enjoy the last few minutes of this excursion enthusiastically in an environment that Marina has taught us how to know and love.

How to get there

Take the road SS 131 until the sign of the 50th Km. A well signed road will take you directly to Villanovaforru (after 5 Km).

On the left part of the last bend, before the crossing just before entering the village, a small track leads to the stables after few hundreds meters.
